Spectral Moon

The modern Mayan calendar has been called ‘Natural Time’ because it seeks to restore our connection to nature’s cycles. That includes the movement of the stars and the earth’s interplay with the moon – but it’s also a reflection of the natural cycle of the human body.

The Tzolkin celebrates human gestation in utero, and the 13 Moon calendar is a reflection of the female menstrual cycle. A 28-day month was created by indigenous tribes who marked the passage of time by a woman’s menses. This tradition was practically universal on our planet, embraced by cultures on every continent.

We follow a year’s arc through 13 months of 28 days each, in resurrection of an ancient way of life. The Mayan wavespell’s sacred energies powerfully ascend and unfurl over the passage of the year.

Spectral Moon

every May 30 – June 26

Mayan symbol: Serpent
Dissolve – Release – Liberation
How do I release and let go?

The Planetary moon is the ninth of 13 in a 365-day solar cycle that begins July 26 with the rise of Sirius at dawn. In the first, Magnetic moon we discovered our purpose for the entirety of this 13 moon year. In the second, Lunar moon we identified the challenge within our purpose, the obstacle we have to integrate or overcome to reach our divine intent. In the third, Electric moon, we felt the presence of the god force fill the distance and discord between our purpose and challenge. In the fourth Self-Existing moon, we were shown specifically what form our service would take, the foundation for the temple this year represents. In the fifth, Overtone moon we were given the empowerment to move our vision upward, and in the sixth, Rhythmic moon, we developed a cadence to pace ourselves in our deep work of this year. In the seventh, Resonant moon we attuned ourselves to the divine world for a moment of inspiration and regeneration. In the eighth, Galactic moon, we integrated the Resonant channel we received with everything we had initiated in the first six moons of the year, creating harmony within and without.

After this intense preparatory work, we were ready in the ninth Solar moon to pulse our intention for this year’s manifestation of our purpose. The tenth Planetary moon was an instant response from the divine forces – our prayers answered and wishes granted in an identifiable way within our earth reality. The eleventh Spectral moon is a sort of reversal, when all that is manifested at the peak of the wave is allowed by the forces of nature to fall away into dissolution. The wave breaks.

The Spectral moon is most primarily a reversal of what we describe as success and accomplishment in Western Civilization. It is the invitation, the celebration, of everything falling apart. We are coached for centuries, millennia, to want to build higher, concretize ideas, develop cures that lead to prolonged life spans, to hang on to stasis and fear rapid change. We seek to destroy what might threaten our safety – criminal acts, immoral urges, – but we wish everything we’re comforted by to always be abundant and readily available. The Planetary existence, being alive on the earth’s outer crust, is a picture of the peak of a wave, the summit of ascension, the highest achievement, the mountain of things. The Spectral energy that immediately follows is the dissolution of this spectacular apex. It undoes the manifestation, or at least redistributes it so that it is available to all.

The so-called Socialist agenda that arises periodically in modern history is always the antidote to rampant hoarding of wealth, when abundance is specialized to certain classes and corners of the globe. This is the same motion of Spectral energy. Each person’s summit – their own heroic quest heavenward, a metaphysical longing to be closer to god – is brilliant, inspired and commendable. Our Planetary existence is not exclusively greedy and self-serving; we need to be motivated to rise and produce, seek divine perfection and attainment of a higher purpose. This is not to be confused, though, with lodging permanently in the grandiosity of a job well done, a mission accomplished. Life, in nature, is cyclical, with ebbs and flows, death and renewal, seasonal change and unforeseen impacts that create chaotic ruptures in our careful plans.

The Spectral moon informs us of the necessity of letting go of mastery, our achieved goals, the challenges met and overcome. We let go not as a loss of what we learned, but in the release of the tension of always straining and seeking to know more. The Spectral energy is liberation from being vigilant, climbing, pushing upward against gravity’s weight. It’s the exhalation after great exertion that almost kept us from easeful breath. It’s also the moment of redistribution of both wealth and knowledge – the wealth of knowledge and experience being the greatest abundance of all. The wave breaks and all our personal, private peaks converge in white water, foment, celebratory aerated chaos. Your acquisition and mine are merged, so that I have my own memories of my path to ascension, and now yours as well.

The first experiences of Spectral energy can certainly feel like the ground falling away from under us – the Planetary moon dissolving into a spectrum of light. We discover how we feel, initially, about spiritual challenges like letting go, giving everything away, feeling blended into oneness instead of individuation. It’s uncomfortable because it’s historically alien to our Western culture. But all spiritual dogma seeks the bliss state of Spectral energy – when we meditate, pray or listen to deeply present teachings we are dissolved of boundaries that keep us in the rigid confinement of the ego. We melt into connection with all things. When we revisit Spectral liberation, each moon it arises or on the recurring days of the Tzolkin calendar, we move from resistance to change and formlessness, to come to delight in it.

We evolve from conforming to materialist values to attuning to spiritual resonance. ‘Everything that rises must converge,’ is one truism, reflecting the way a peak is smaller and tighter than the broad base supporting it. We all move to the height of a personal odyssey over ten moons, then spend the next three – Spectral, Crystal and Cosmic – falling out of tight self-understanding and personal achievement to intermingle with others who have made a parallel journey. The Spectral moon is the most dramatic shift from a wave’s crest back to sea level, an unraveling of the ten stages of ascent in one 28-day stretch. It feels dramatic, causes a certain distress when we first free-fall – or maybe the fear arises more from our Spectral sensation of flying. Just when we get oriented to this untethered existence, we must crash back to the ocean’s surface. Do we resist the saltwater sting or splash?

Ultimately, the Spectral moon will offer different opportunities for both fear and fearlessness each time we travel through its vortex. The ‘tube’ of a concave wave is another channel or birth canal this time offers. We are reborn through the interplay of water, air, light and the earthen oceanic floor. Let life be a kaleidoscope of ever-changing angles and colors for a while. Let yourself play with the experience of falling versus flying, or the seamlessness between riding an airwave after so much time in a watery one.

The Spectral moon is at its heart transitional, rapidly so. We won’t lodge in the foam of dissolution any longer than we did at the peak of Planetary manifestation. More clarity will come when the water settles. Try to go with the flow, even when it seems to crash into a billion water molecules. The parallel undoing in your being is merely, beautifully, the grinding of your hard edges into the softest granules of sand. Breaking waves erode rock beachheads and our own most intractable holding. This moon is a gift of great release.

The Spectral moon is a time of liberation, all the intensity of our previous moons’ achievement dissolved and redistributed. We use the 28 days to release our egoic hold on our own gain, even our ascent towards god, and realize our path in a human lifetime is always back towards earth and each other, threading our enlightenment back to the darkness of womb-like rebirth. The Spectral moon is a necessary destruction that leads inevitably to another cycle of creation, so we celebrate what we let go of and also the indelible memories of all we accomplished. We trust the chaos and that we are not breaking apart but free.
