Blue Eagle is one of the 20 archetypes to be celebrated by the Maya in their Tzolkin sacred count. The 20 day signs are represented on our fingers and toes, and the journey through their images tells a creation mythology. Each of us is born on a day of the Tzolkin, and belong accordingly to one of the 20 ‘tribes’ and its teachings. We may embody the ancient icon described in the Mayan stellae – the stone carvings of their temples – or relate to the modernized language of the Tzolkin as channeled by Dr. Jose Arguelles. Through emersion in the calendar count, we can find our own correlations between self and the core images of the day signs. By meditating on the words, images, and our own perceptions of Tzolkin birth energy, we can find another awakening to ourselves and how we relate to the world.
Blue Eagle shows the furrowed, discerning expression of a predatory raptor, but all bird life is celebrated in this tribe, as well as any aspect of atmospheric flight. It is also the celebration of how our mind sits in our body as a place of direction and oversight. The brain calculates movements and functions to the myriad organs, to every operative cell, while our crown opens on an energy level to the sky and is empowered by the god force there. This lofty perch is where Blue Eagle people live, day in and day out, at a remove from the groundlings scurrying along earth’s floor, a higher mind connected to the spirit world but still at such a distance that they are left often in solitude.
This is the theme of the Blue Eagle birthright, being separate and isolated, independent, away in one’s thoughts or a kind of visionary reverie. Blue Eagle people can be scholarly, research-oriented professionally or just as an enthusiast: being expert at something, committing to the same interest for long stretches until it has been seen in every possibly light. They like activities they can stay at an arm’s length from people – at least their wingspan – so there is room to move and also escape. But they do like situations where they can see things play out in dramatic arcs – being in the audience of a performance, tracking a sports team, following the headlines – where they can replicate that perspective of hovering above the action.
Because Blue Eagle people tend toward loner status, they avoid rampant expression of sexuality, sensuality and emotional vulnerability. They have the concern with the spirit world, or assessing earth from above, and not stopping to feel deeply into their physical body or become entangled with another. They can pair for life with deep attachment and childrearing, but there’s not likely passion, charged attraction, rapture, any strong feeling state that jeopardizes their need to stay focused on the air currents – thoughts, ideas – to maintain their flight. Blue Eagle shows others how to thread human experience to the heavens through the mind’s eye, be it higher learning, philosophizing, meditation, and any cerebral disciplines that keep one’s thoughts engaged. Even though out there in the wide sky, Blue Eagle’s attention stays honed, their sightline fixed on what they seek. If they space out and seemingly relax this intensity it’s because they’re carried a distance on the wind. In human living, this might be when spirit moves them, when they divinity soars and carries them to an epic high.
For all their time alone or in association with a pure god essence, Blue Eagle is connected in one strong way to others: through their nest. While seemingly aloof or in their heads to most people, they come home to close proximity with family, usually biological rather than reinvented. They hold an allegiance to their kind, a particular flock, with whom there is commonality rather than dissent. They like birds of a feather, in real terms, allegiances and agreement. Fighting is beneath them, for the scrappier four-legged creatures trapped in planetary restriction, except they also like to show everyone that they can see farther and wider, so they know better. Blue Eagle is so often far gone from the rest of us, they can be socially awkward. They can be absent-minded and seem aloof, but then they are so often brilliant, insightful, in masterful awareness of how life – all the aspects of body, mind, spirit while omitting emotions – works.
Blue Eagle’s action – its direction in life – is to create, because they act as a Creator who sits at the peak of the pyramid of all existence. They know how to invent and accomplish because they understand how so many processes unfold and objects are put together. They are rarely in full subservience, more often have empowerment over their free time or governance within their employment, so they can act as the one in charge or overseeing a project. Blue Eagle people can be fine artists and writers, their visual capacity so detailed and deep, and they can also bask in others’ ability to refine life in words and images, the big picture view.
Blue Eagle’s power – its offering to strengthen us in turn – is vision. There is their ability to fly, to be above, that separates them from the rest of us, which might be mental brilliance or ingenuity that sets them as leaders, alone in pioneering new wisdom. But Blue Eagle also has this gift of penetrating and expansive sight. They can see distance, and they can see detail. Nothing escapes their eye. Therefor their everyday living is dominated by what they behold by sight, more than smell, touch, listening, tasting and then the sixth sense of intuition. They stay in the air, their minds, scanning and sweeping their eyes over the great spread of earth and sky. This is their life function, their orientation and their potency. They can at worst be voyeurs and looky-loos, gossip about the people in their lives as if they were underlings. But in their best expanse, they are visionaries, understanding the big picture beyond everyday cultural conception, one woven seamlessly to the sky gods’ intent.
Blue Eagle has the essence of mind. Compared to the rest of the animal kingdom a bird has the lightest bones and any heft it achieves is plumped up feathers. It’s hardly cellular, positioned next to a land mammal. The only density is in its mental capacity, its ability to synthesize the sights its eyes amasses. This is the focal point of the Blue Eagle people, their distillation. How they’re physically formed, who they know, what they do in the course of their lives is seated in their brain organ, its lower function of survival and higher aspiration of complete understanding of god. Blue Eagle in their daily life have been lifted through an escape hatch into the sky, and they know the presences there more intimately than your average human being. The mind they hone in themselves is modeled after the higher realm of spirits they’ve come to know more intimately than the carnal world.
Blue Eagle is antipodal, opposite to Red Serpent, which is one of the easiest examples of different to a polar extreme. They live at opposite ends of our planet’s atmosphere – its outermost edges or its surface dirt. Red Serpent crawls along the earth’s surface, Blue Eagle only touches down to take its prey. One is highly vulnerable, the other a ruthless hitman. They meet really for that meal where Blue Eagle consumes Red Serpent, if at all. But we have an image from ancient Mexico of Quetzalcoatl, the god that is half-bird, half-snake. And this describes the antipode relationship perfectly: two strikingly opposite entities meet to constitute something beautiful, powerful, blessed. Blue Eagle is balanced by Red Serpent people, days, gestures, brought down to earth to feel its topography much closer to its skin. This gesture of descent, the embrace of being lithe, sensual and out of their head for a while, creates holiness.
Blue Eagle is supported by Yellow Seed. This makes sense. Birds eat seeds for nourishment and seeds are spread through bird droppings, evolutionary sustainment secured in both directions. Really, Yellow Seed is the totem for all plant life just as Blue Eagle represents all birds, and there is so much interdependency between them. Think of the hummingbird feeding on flower nectar, the crow pecking at harvest corn, the song birds perched on the branches of the seasonal fruit tree. Blue Eagle and Yellow Seed have equally focused fixations: Blue Eagle on vision, and Yellow Seed on awareness. Blue Eagle is more heady, thinking thoughts, Yellow Seed more body, feeling sensation. They fill each other’s gaps. They are both light, porous, rising to the sun and points of bright beauty against the backdrop of land and sky.
Blue Eagle has a mystical, occult relationship to White Worldbridger. When the highest bird in flight meets the bridge out of this atmosphere and into the heavens, great magic and mystery is beheld. It’s almost as if death, a crossing over, is really the eagle’s aim when it disappears into the farthest distance from earth. To meet it in White Worldbridger brings giddy relief: the gateway into a greater beyond is arrived upon and entered. In life, great thinkers imbued with Blue Eagle visionary intellect are fascinated by philosophies and spiritualities about other worlds, real and imagined and beyond imagining. There is such an appetite for height, flight and relief from the congestion of planet earth that escape into an afterlife has at least fantastical appeal. White Worldbridger also accesses the ancestors, and Blue Eagle, family-focused, stays connected to those who have passed as part of their flock.
If you are guided by Blue Eagle, you are impressed by feats of intellect and visionary perspectives. You chase paths away from earth through spiritual discipline and perception that the sky – within earth’s atmosphere and the celestial beyond – is full of spirits and phenomena more interesting than most humans. Your own mind guides your other body parts that more sluggishly trail along, and thoughts race chronically but also make you alive with creative imagining. When you need to evolve, you focus, tighten your sightline, and lift off to get a bigger picture of what you’re expanding beyond. Sometimes you lose intimate human contact by getting too far from its reach.
